Boolarra football / Netball Club Mid Year Report – June. 2011

FOOTY NEWS

We are at the halfway point of the Mid Gippsland season and the Boolarra Football/Netball Club has been travelling very well so far. All teams have improved out of sight since last year.

On the football side of things the 4ths have been winning plenty of games and the future looks bright with some of the good young players we have coming through the ranks. Coach Rob Hussey is moulding the young lads into a formidable outfit. The reserves football team currently sits on top of the ladder with a massive percentage and are taking all before them. This is in great contrast to last year where the team fought tooth and nail to just scrape into the finals. 2nd year coach Marcus Carnes has his troops firing and the team just keeps on improving out of sight.

The seniors are the biggest success story of the year so far. After last year’s disappointing 9th place out of 10 when we lost many close games, the seniors now find themselves pushing for a top 3 position at the halfway point of the season. With a leaner and fitter team and some handy new recruits they are fast becoming one of the biggest improvers in the league. Backman turned forward Kenneth Towt has been a revelation down forward and our new speedy and tough midfield has added greatly to our already strong back and forward lines. The hard work over the past few years by coach Tony Giardina and his support staff is really starting to pay dividends. With good numbers at training each night (up to 40 senior and reserves players each night) and a desire to succeed the team is going from strength to strength. The team cannot rest on their laurels, however and all players understand that it’s how they perform at the pointy end of the season that really counts. If the boys keep up their current work-rate there is no doubt that the team can get to and perform well in the finals series.

NETBALL NEWS

The netballers have also improved out of sight in all grades. Although the A & B Grade scores haven’t shown their massive improvement it is quite evident when watching them play that the girls have a new-found fire and passion for playing netball for Boolarra. With a very young list of senior netballers, Boolarra will continue to improve and will be winning many games in no time.

The D & C Grade teams are currently jostling for a finals berth with both teams teetering on the verge of the top 5. Both grades have played in some massive games this year and have won some very tight contests. These are the games that build character and their ability to win the tight ones will prove very handy by the end of the season.

The junior netballers have also been playing some good netball in patches and look like they are having a ball playing for the club. This is what we want out of our junior teams and we look forward to these girls developing into good senior netballers over the next couple of years.

CLUB FACILITIES

Recently, the club was fortunate enough to have the netball/tennis courts resurfaced and new lights installed. The courts now look fantastic and the girls will benefit greatly from their new improved playing surface. The recreation reserve also has a new toilet block being installed between the cricket club rooms and football change rooms. These new facilities are a much needed addition to the recreation reserve’s amenities.

The club is still fundraising to build the new deck out the front of the clubrooms. The committee is working tirelessly to get the deck project up and running and the whole club looks forward to when the project is finally financed and built. Anyone who can help out with our funding for the new deck is encouraged to contact Darren Napier at the club. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All in all, season 2011 has been a good one for the club so far. There is still a lot of hard work needed to be done in the second half of the year to ensure that it becomes a great year.
