Grants of up to $5000 to purchase equipment, subsidise petrol costs or provide training courses for volunteers are now available to community groups and organisations across Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has urged local community and sporting clubs and non-profit organisations to make the most of the opportunity and apply for funding through the Volunteer Grants 2011 program.
Mr Chester said volunteer groups make an invaluable contribution to local communities, providing services and facilities that governments would never be in a position to offer. “Gippsland would definitely be worse off without the efforts and dedication shown by the thousands of volunteers across our region,” Mr Chester said. “The Volunteer Grants program is a great opportunity to relieve some of the costs associated with running volunteer groups such as equipment, travel and training. “I encourage local volunteer clubs across Gippsland to apply to the program as soon they can – because there is only a month left before applications close.”
