Boolarra Bowls & Recreation Club – Dec. 2010

Season 2010/2011 officially started with the opening of the greens on 19th September 2010. All members had a good day with the weather being kind.

The Men’s Section of pennants first game in Division 4 saw us host Yarragon and Division 6 host Morwell Club. The weather was threatening to turn nasty, but the rain held off and the bowlers enjoyed a good game. Unfortunately neither Division could bring home the winning points.

The second game for Division 6 was played at Morwell Bowls Club but rain saw play abandoned. Division 4 had a wet day at Traralgon Bowls Club, however we soldiered on to play a required 60 ends so a result could be achieved – Traralgon were the victors.

In the third game of Men’s Pennant, Division Four hosted Traralgon RSL Club, unfortunately we were out-played with some extremely good bowls put in by both sides.

Division Six hosted our closest rival Yinnar and were victorious – well done Division Six. Good Bowling.

On a sad note, we have lost one of our earliest members with Arthur Robbins passing away at age 90. Arthur was Secretary for 20 years, President of Mid Gippsland Bowls Association, President of Boolarra Bowls Club and also Life Member of Boolarra Bowls & Recreation Club. Arthur was also Club Champion several times. Arthur and his late wife Ivy, were very passionate club people, both on the green and off. The greens, surrounds and lovely gardens were a credit to them. Thank you for your dedication to the Club – Rest In Peace.

From Ladies Section of Boolarra Bowling Club

Over the past few months the Boolarra Bowling Club has been saddened by the loss of three lady stalwarts. Condolences from our members go out to their families.

Evelyn Richards in her 90th year, Thelma Deppeler aged 85 and Maisie Fox in her 102nd year.  (We believe she was probably the oldest person to reside in Boolarra).

Evelyn was a member for about 45 years and during this time, worked tirelessly for the club, including craftwork, knitting and crocheting articles for our stalls or to raffle to raise funds.  It has been documented that in the early days our associates were not lacking in assisting with manual labour.  Ev skippered a Division One pennant team, represented Boolarra in Inter Association games and won G.D.L.B.A champion pairs and fours.

Thelma had been a member for about 40 years.  She was one of the skippers in Division Three when we won the premiership in 84-85.  Thelma was a good club member enjoying life to the fullest with a drink and loved to tell stories and jokes.  She has been president of the G.D.L.B.A Past Presidents Association, helping with the organisation of their trips and social events.

Maisie had been a club member for 51 years.  For her 90th birthday she received a set of new narrow bias bowls.  Her achievements have included being the winner of G.D.L.B.A State Title Singles and fours, winner of many Boolarra Club games including three single championships and championship pairs with her daughter Lorna.  She has also skippered in Division One pennant and played her last pennant game when she was aged 96.  At bowling functions her sponges and pavlovas were always in great demand.

These three ladies have all been Presidents of our club and great role models by being actively involved in every aspect of club life, also representing us at numerous tournaments and invitation days.  Each one of them has enriched our club in various ways and will be remembered fondly by all those who knew them.

The families of Evelyn, Thelma and Maisie have expressed their appreciation to all those involved in assisting with the catering for their wakes at the Bowling Club.
