1st Yinnar Scout Group has had a fantastic year in 2010. We started the year off on New Year’s Day with nine of our Scouts, two Venturers, a Rover and two Leaders departing for the Australian Scout Jamboree 2010, held at Cataract Park near Appin in NSW. Our country kids enjoyed nearly two weeks of camping, activities and excursions with 14,000 other Scouts from across Australia and overseas. The Australian Jamboree is held every three years and is a major event in the life of any Scout.
Another highlight of 2010 was Cuboree, held for Cubs aged 7-10 years old at Gilwell Park in Gembrook. Britney Dubber of Yinnar attended with Cubs from Morwell East and Churchill and spent five days packed with exciting activities (and mud) with 3,500 other Cubs from across the state. Cuboree is normally held every three years but will be held again in 2011 before reverting to its tri-annual schedule.
We have also seen some major personal achievements this year, with Angus Sauppe winning ‘Scout of the Year’ for Strzelecki District, sponsored by Hazelwood Rotary Club. Angus has also recently completed all of the requirements for the Australian Scout Medallion, presented at Tintern Grammar School in Ringwood on 20th Nov 2010. Congratulations to Angus on achieving the highest award in the Scout section. After all the hard work, careful planning, teamwork and sheer determination, he most surely deserves it.
Another major achievement, and one we have not seen at Yinnar for about 8 years, is Craig Millsom’s successful completion of the requirements for the Queen Scout Award. This is an amazing achievement, involving a lot of planning, paperwork, activities, community service, teamwork and careful planning as each task had to be proposed formally and accepted by his peers prior to commencement. After completion Craig was formally awarded his Queen Scout at Government House on 2nd Oct 2010 and celebrated with a less formal occasion at Walhalla on 20th Nov 2010.
Cubs (7-10 years), Scouts (10-14 years), Venturers (14-17 years) and Rovers (17-25 years) have all been running very active programs with a great variety of activities being run throughout the year. Many thanks to the Leaders for all their hard work during the year.
Group Committee has also had a very active year with many fund-raisers, from the cake stall at the Boolarra Folk Festival, sausage sizzles at the Boolarra Rodeo(s) and the Hazelwood Pondage Car Show, selling tickets for the Victorian Scout Raffle (1000 tickets sold!!!) and raffle tickets at the Yinnar Community Hotel for the weekly meat tray. The committee has also continued with maintenance and minor improvements. A big thank-you to all parents who have been involved during the year.
A Scout Group like ours would not be possible without help from the community and there are many people and groups that have helped throughout the year, but most notably we’d like to thank the Boolarra CFA, Yinnar Community Hotel, the Yinnar Angling Club, Webster’s Butchery, Jack Scott & Sons, Loy Yang Power, and Churchill Ritchie’s IGA. Thank you also to the many people who have bought cakes, sausages and raffle tickets from us during the year!
